An addition sentence can be written horizontally or vertically as shown below:
Commutative Property
The commutative property says that changing the order of the addends in an addition sentence does not change the sum. 

For example: 
Adding Single and Double Digit  Addends
Example 1: Add two single digit addends.
5 + 4 = 9
Example 2: Add a double digit and a single digit addend.
5 + 8 = 13
Carry or regroup the 1 to the tens column.
The sum is 9.
The sum is 43.
Example 3: Add two double digit addends.
5 + 8 = 13
Carry or regroup the 1 to the tens column.
1 + 2 = 3
The sum is 33.
1 + 2 + 1 = 4
