Some Helpful Tools
The key is to find a number that when multiplied times the divisor will be close enough to the dividend without going over.

The dividend is always larger than the divisor.

If the difference is larger than the divisor, then the quotient has to be increased.

Always keep numbers aligned in columns.
Division is a way of separating a group of things into equal parts.

Distributive Property
Using the Distributive Property, the dividend can be broken apart  to make it easier to divide.

Example:
How many groups of 3 will it take to make 24? The answer is 8.
Now let's say that we want to break apart 24 using (18 + 6)       3.
Dividing Single and Double Digit Quotients
Example 1:
Step 1:  How many times can 2 go into 6? 3 times

Step 2:  Write 3 above the 6. Multiply. 3 x 2 = 6

Step 3:  Write 6 below the dividend. Subtract. 6 - 6 = 0.

Step 4:  Write zero. The quotient is 3.
Example 2:
Step 1: How many times can 6 go into 6? 1 time

Step 2: Write 1 above the 6. Multiply. 1 x 6 = 6

Step 3: Write 6 below the dividend. Subtract. 6 - 6 = 0.

Step 4: There is no need to write zero. Bring down the 5.

Step 5: How many times can 6 go into 5? zero times

Step 6: Write zero above the 5. Multiply. 0 x 6 = 0.

Step 7: Write zero below the dividend. Subtract. 5 - 0 = 5.

Step 8: The quotient is 10 with a remainder of 5.
Check:
Multiply the quotient times the divisor. Next, add
the remainder (if any). If the product equals the
dividend, your answer is correct.

Example 3:
Step 1: How many times can 14 go into 5? zero times

Step 2: How many times can 14 go into 58? 4 times

Step 3: Write 4 above the 8. Multiply. 4 x 14 = 56.

Step 4: Write 56 below the dividend. Subtract. 58 - 56 = 2.

Step 5: Write 2 below the 6.

Step 6: How many times can 14 go into 2? zero times.
Bring down the 2, which creates 22.

Step 7: How many times can 14 go into 22? 1 time

Step 8: Write 1 above the 2. Multiply. 1 x 14 = 14.

Step 9: Write 14 below the 22. Subtract. 22 - 14 = 8.

Step 10: The quotient is 41 with a remainder of 8.

Rules for Dividing
Divide using a single digit dividend and divisor.
Divide using a two-digit dividend and a single digit divisor.
Divide using a three-digit dividend and a two-digit divisor.
Multiply the quotient times the divisor. Next, add
the remainder (if any). If the product equals the
dividend, your answer is correct.
