I. Writing

The multiple choice questions will depend on your ability to:

  • communicate ideas clearly and effectively
  • make revisions to a piece of writing
  • identify sentence-level errors
  • understand grammatical elements and structure and how they relate to
        
  • identify correctly formed grammatical structures
  • combine sentences effectively using transitional words and phrases

How to choose the correct answer from multiple-choice questions:

  • Look at the choices given.
  • Use what you've learned in school or life experiences to help you narrow

  • Once you've eliminated all illogical choices, the correct answer will be
       

You will need the following to write an essay:

  • what you've learned in school
  • what you've read in and out of school
  • your knowledge of current events
  • your past experiences
  • your extracurricular or outdoor activities

How to write an effective essay:

  • Read the instructions carefully.
  • Write on the given topic.
  • Decide your point of view.
  • Organize your thoughts.
  • Write clear and concise sentences.
  • Proofread your essay.

Just for Practice:

Use the following suggestions to sharpen your writing skills.

  • Choose a topic and write five paragraphs about that topic.
            





  • Decide your point of view.

  • Use a No. 2 (soft lead) pencil to write your essay since this is the
          

  • Make sure to stay on topic and in line with your point of view.

  • Rewrite your paragraphs to make their meaning clearer and more 
        


  • Make sure your writing is legible.

  • Proofread your essay.

  • Choose a new topic for another essay. Set a timer for 25 minutes
        

The following is another way to study for the Writing Section of the exam:

  • Study the meaning of Greek and Latin root words to strengthen your vocabulary.
  • Keep an index or journal of vocabulary words and practice them daily.
  • Change passive voice sentences to active voice sentences.
  • Substitute concrete illustrations whenever you write about something abstract to give the reader a clearer understanding of what you are saying.
  • Improve sentences by using parallelism.

Sentences with two or more elements that are written in the same form are said
to be parallel.

Example:

Not parallel: Jeannie likes pepperoni, Italian sausage and to eat Canadian                               
                                               
Dissect the sentence and look at each part to make the sentence parallel.









The sentence can be made parallel by removing the infinitive and leaving the string of direct objects as in the corrected sentence below. 

Parallel:  Jeannie likes pepperoni, Italian sausage, and Canadian bacon on her
